A 200-amp upgrade on a Village brick home
One Bloor West Village home we worked on had outgrown its service the way most Village homes eventually do — a renovated kitchen, air conditioning, and an electric car on the way, all asking more of an electrical service installed generations ago.
We replaced it with a full 200-amp upgrade: new service, new panel, and new feeders run in copper through a double-brick wall — the kind of wall that doesn’t forgive shortcuts. With the capacity in place, we finished the job with a 40-amp Flo charger at the driveway. It’s the pattern we see all over the Village: a house built for a few lights and a radio now running a modern household, made possible by upgrading the service first and adding the loads second.

What we do in Bloor West Village
Start with the service, and the rest of the house’s electrical stops being a compromise.
Panel & 200A service upgrades
The Village specialty. Full service replacements — mast, feeders, panel — sized for the renovated kitchens, AC and chargers these homes now carry. Panel upgrades →
Clevis & service mast repair
Overhead services cross the Village’s mature trees to reach century-old brick. When the anchor rusts, pulls or gets flagged, the repair is the homeowner’s — and it’s ours to do properly. Clevis repair →
Renovation wiring
Additions and gut renovations on homes where every wall is plaster, lath and brick. Wiring planned against real panel capacity, permitted and inspected at rough-in and finish. Renovation wiring →
Lighting installation
Pendants over the island, sconces, dining fixtures hung dead level — on ceiling boxes actually rated for the weight. Lighting installation →
Troubleshooting & repairs
Tripping breakers, dead outlets, circuits with a history. Methodical fault-finding in houses where the wiring has been added to, more than once, over a hundred years.
EV charger installation
Chargers sized to the service — after the load calculation, not before. On a 100-amp Village home, that usually means load management or the upgrade conversation first.
Built in the 1910s–30s, wired for another era
Bloor West Village grew up along Bloor Street in the 1910s and 1920s — the shopping strip whose merchants’ association, founded in 1970, became the world’s first business improvement area. Behind the strip, street after street of detached and semi-detached brick homes went up on narrow lots: Runnymede, Willard, Glendonwynne, the streets running north and south off Bloor.
Most are solid masonry — double brick, or brick veneer over block — which makes them wonderful houses and particular electrical projects. Fishing a new circuit through plaster and lath without tearing the room apart is a skill; running new feeders through a double-brick wall is another. Many homes still run 100-amp services, some still have fuse panels, and the least-touched houses hold remnants of knob-and-tube wiring from the original build.
Space is the other Village constant: narrow mutual driveways, services that come in over the rear of the lot, and a mature canopy that keeps overhead lines working hard through every storm season. The electrical work here rewards planning — which is why a Village job so often starts with the service upgrade and builds from there.
