The Swansea call that wouldn’t sit still

Vu, a Swansea homeowner, had a wiring fault that came and went — the kind that never shows itself while you’re watching it. Intermittent faults are where troubleshooting earns its name: no part to swap on a guess, just methodical testing until the circuit gives up its secret.

We traced it properly, explained what we were finding in plain English as we went, and when a minor follow-up surfaced afterwards, we came back and finished it. Vu is a repeat customer, and his five-star Google review from October 2026 said the troubleshooting was done properly, the explanations were in plain English, and the crew returned for the follow-up. That’s the standard every Swansea job gets held to.

★★★★★

Tricky wiring troubleshooting, done properly — with plain-English explanations along the way, and a return visit for a minor follow-up.

What we do in Swansea

Old-house electrical, handled the way old houses need it handled — find the real problem first, then fix it once.

Troubleshooting & repairs

Dead circuits, flickering lights, breakers that trip for a reason nobody has found yet. We test, we trace, we fix the cause — not the symptom.

Panel upgrades

Swansea still runs on plenty of fuse panels and 60- or 100-amp services. We replace them with modern breaker panels sized for how you actually live. Panel upgrades →

Clevis & service mast repair

The hardware where Hydro’s lines meet your house is yours — and under Swansea’s mature trees it takes a beating. Rusted, pulling, or flagged by Hydro, we replace it. Clevis repair →

Lighting installation

Fixtures, sconces, pendants and layered lighting for homes that were wired for a single ceiling bulb per room. Lighting installation →

Renovation wiring

Kitchens, basements and additions wired into century-old electrical systems — planned against your panel’s real capacity, permitted and inspected. Renovation wiring →

EV charger installation

Chargers for Swansea driveways and garages — after a load calculation, so your panel carries it safely. When it can’t, we’ll show you the upgrade path.

Swansea’s houses, electrically

Swansea was its own village until Toronto annexed it in 1967, and it still reads that way: early-1900s homes down toward the lake and along Windermere and Ellis, wartime houses, and post-war builds climbing toward the Humber. Riverside Drive runs along the park; the lots are tight, the trees are old, and almost everything overhead.

That housing stock has an electrical signature. The oldest homes were wired in the knob-and-tube era, and lengths of it still turn up in Swansea walls and attics. Fuse panels and 100-amp services remain common long after the homes outgrew them. Renovations layer new kitchens and bathrooms onto services sized for a radio and a few lamps — which is why so much of our Swansea work starts at the panel and works outward.

Overhead services under a mature canopy are the other Swansea constant: wind, ice and branches work on the clevis and mast year after year. And because so many of these homes sit a short walk from the lake, whole-home surge protection has become standard advice here — it’s why we built a dedicated page for surge protection in Swansea, Baby Point and Bloor West.

Swansea questions, answered

My Swansea home still has a fuse panel. Should I replace it?
A fuse panel isn’t automatically dangerous — but most Swansea fuse panels sit on 60- or 100-amp services that strain under modern loads, and insurers increasingly ask questions about them. A breaker panel upgrade gives you capacity, modern protection and room to grow. We’ll assess your panel and service size first and quote it fixed, before any work starts.
Do Swansea homes still have knob-and-tube wiring?
In the oldest homes, yes — it still turns up, especially in walls and attic runs that were never opened. Knob-and-tube was standard practice in its era, but it doesn’t age gracefully and it complicates insulation and insurance. We can check what’s actually in your walls and stage replacement sensibly, often alongside renovation work.
A circuit keeps acting up, then fixing itself. Can you find a fault like that?
Yes — intermittent faults are a troubleshooting specialty, not a parts-swapping exercise. We test the circuit methodically until the fault shows itself, then fix the cause. It’s exactly the work Swansea homeowner Vu reviewed for us in October 2026: tricky wiring, traced properly, explained in plain English, with a follow-up visit to close it out.
The wires from the pole attach to my house and the hardware looks rusty. Whose job is that?
Yours — the clevis and mast on your house are the homeowner’s equipment, even though Toronto Hydro owns the lines. Replacing them needs a licensed electrical contractor, an ESA permit, and Hydro’s disconnect and reconnect coordinated into the visit. We handle all of it. More on our clevis installation and repair page.
Can I add an EV charger or a hot tub to a 100-amp Swansea home?
Sometimes, yes — it depends on your actual load, which we calculate rather than guess. Where the numbers work, a charger can go in as-is or with a load management device. Where they don’t, a 200-amp service upgrade is the honest answer, and it future-proofs the house. Either way the work runs on an ESA permit.
