Case study · Fleet EV charging · Etobicoke

Two electric vans. No new transformer.

An armored car company in Etobicoke needed its two Ford E-Transit vans charged and ready every day. Other contractors quoted a new transformer and a distribution rebuild. Our load calculations found a better answer, and saved the client over $12,000.

The situation

The company moves valuables for a living, and its Etobicoke facility runs on schedule. When the company put two large Ford E-Transit vans into service, it needed dependable Level 2 charging at the shop: vans plugged in at night, charged and ready first thing in the morning.

What they were quoted

The quotes they had in hand took the expensive road. To create charging capacity, other contractors priced a new 600-volt primary step-down transformer down to 120/208 volts, plus extensive rework of the site’s distribution to make space for it. A new transformer, major distribution work, downtime at a working secure facility, and a bill to match.

What we did instead

3e is led by a professional engineer, and it shows in how a job like this starts: with a proper inspection and proper load calculations, not assumptions. The inspection found what the other quotes had missed. The site has two electrical services. Several circuits were not in use, and that unused capacity could be put to work. The engineered design used the infrastructure already in the building.

The result

We installed a 50-amp circuit delivering 40-amp Level 2 charging for the E-Transit vans, fed from the existing services. No transformer. No distribution rebuild. Against the quoted route, the client saved over $12,000, and got exactly the charging it needed.

That is the difference an engineered design makes: you pay for the work your building truly needs, and not for the work it doesn’t.
